The best-kept secret from Pouilly-Fuissé is this latest cuvée from Domaine de la Chapelle. AX-B is an acronym for Aux Bouthières, which is their 1er Cru vineyard. However, this plot is located right next to Aux Bouthières, more as an extension, which has not yet been certified. Technically, it is not yet a 1er Cru, although it certainly will be. To complicate matters further... this wine also includes juice from the premier cru vineyard Aux Bouthières as well as some from the adjacent vineyard that is still unclassified. Because it is not 100% from this single vineyard, it cannot carry the name of this vineyard. Hence the codename Ax-B. Premier Cru quality at entry-level Burgundy pricing. Don’t tell anyone!
New oak, rich, juicy yet also dry, with underlying Earl Grey spices, dry candies, beeswax, crème brûlée finish, and refreshing acidity. This is the most complete wine around €30 in the world. Its wines generally benefit immensely from at least 1 year of bottle aging.
This is a serious wine, so it should be served with serious food. Smoked dishes pair beautifully with the nose, and the fatty texture complements fatty fish types nicely.
Pascal Rollet, The Goat. Located in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, in the historic hamlet of Pouilly, the estate spans just 7.65 ha. If you have ever visited Southern Burgundy, it is likely you have dined at La Courtille de Solutré, where Pascal Rollet's wines from Domaine de la Chapelle are consistently among the most sought after on the wine list. Pascal, often wearing a cowboy hat, has remained down-to-earth despite his fame and is always willing to let us taste his wines when he is not working in the vineyards. However, he prefers to spend all day among his vines. The best calling card of Sud-Bourgogne is their Pouilly-Fuissé cuvée named AX-B, with its characteristic southern Chardonnay curves and endless rays of sunshine in the glass. AX-B is an acronym for Aux Bouthières, their 1er Cru vineyard. However, this plot is more an extension of the same terroir of the Aux Bouthières vineyard, which has not yet been certified. Technically, it is not yet a 1er Cru, although it surely will be. For now, we don't have to pay for this future certification.
The Mâconnais is primarily known for its white wines, mainly made from the Chardonnay grape. The region has several appellations, with Mâcon-Villages, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly-Fuissé, and Saint-Véran being the most prominent. These wines are fresh, fruity, and often characterized by fine minerality reminiscent of the top wines from northern Burgundy but with a softer and more approachable style. The wines from the Mâconnais often display a pronounced terroir that subtly differs from village to village, giving each bottle its unique character.
At Burgundy or Nowhere, you will find an extensive selection of Mâconnais wines, from well-known names to hidden gems. We are particularly excited about the wines from Domaine de la Chapelle, whose Saint-Véran is known for its impressive depth and complexity at a reasonable price. Our goal is to offer wines where the price reflects what is in the bottle, not just the name on the label.
