A white Burgundy wine that you didn't even know you needed! With elements from much more expensive appellations at an entry-level Burgundy price. Mâcon-Uchizy cuvee "Marguerite" is a tribute to their grandmother Marguerite Thevenard.
These 40-60 year old vines are the fruits of her heritage. This group of parcels is located on a plateau at an altitude of 250m on the border of the municipalities of Uchizy and Chardonnay in the northern part of the Mâconnais, just below the exit for Tournus. Predominantly on clay-limestone soil. This wine is floral and has notes of yellow fruits with a subtle buttery hazelnut (Beurre noisette) and honey-like aromas, along with the scent of a recently struck match (sulfur oxide, which is tastier than it sounds) in the nose that you encounter more in the pricier Côte de Beaune (especially Puligny) region. The palate, however, is fresh/firm/slender with a ringing saline minerality but also generous with a characteristic juicy core typical of Mâcon and a touch of bitterness in the finish. This cuvee is aged for 6 months in new oak barrels and is then pumped over using nitrogen (to prevent oxidation), which greatly enhances freshness and drinkability. The oak influence is minimal and is only detectable in the nose.
Their comparable La Martine Cuvee received 92/100 points from Decanter Magazine for the same 2021 vintage. However, it does not have the stunning Beurre noisette nose of this Marguerite Cuvee.
Perfect for an aperitif or served with white fish in a delicious beurre blanc sauce or ceviche. Or with pumpkin orzo with roasted hazelnuts and thyme or risotto with white asparagus.
The Mâconnais is especially known for its white wines, which are primarily made from the Chardonnay grape. The region has numerous appellations, of which Mâcon-Villages, Viré-Clessé, Pouilly-Fuissé, and Saint-Véran are the most prominent. These wines are fresh, fruity, and often characterized by fine minerality that recalls the top wines from northern Burgundy, but with a softer and more accessible style. The wines from the Mâconnais often have a distinct terroir, which subtly varies by village, giving each bottle its own character.
At Burgundy or Nowhere, you will find an extensive selection of Mâconnais wines, from well-known names to hidden gems. We are particularly excited about the wines from Domaine de la Chapelle, whose Saint-Véran is known for its impressive depth and complexity at a reasonable price. The Pouilly-Fuissé AX-B from the same domaine is also an excellent choice for those looking for a high-quality Mâconnais experience without the high price of the Côte d'Or. Our goal is to offer wines where the price reflects what is in the bottle, and not just the name on the label.
